Tips for Pumping Breast Milk While Traveling

There are really only three options for pumping on a plane: in your seat, in the bathroom, or in a jump seat — unfortunately, all are sub-optimal. BUT, being prepared is the key to smooth pumping in the sky.

Pumping in your seat is usually the most comfortable option, especially if you can score the window for added privacy. For the most part, your neighbors will either be asleep or plugged into their devices so no one will be any wiser. Plus, the general whirling from the plane’s engine will cover up the noise from your pump.

Feeling a bit self-conscious? Then opt for the bathroom where you’ll have the convenience of a sink and a little extra privacy. Notify a flight attendant so they can be on standby, should you need anything — telling a flight attendant will hopefully lead to less pestering by fellow passengers knocking on the door wondering why you are taking so long!

If you are traveling alone with your baby, it’s always going to be a little trick. Hopefully, you’ll have a friendly person beside you to give you a helping hand.

What you need for pumping on the plane:

  1. A diaper bag with your pump, bottles, and accessories
  2. Comfortable clothing that provides easy access
  3. Ziplock bags — these will come in handy when you’re storing your used accessories
  4. Wet wipes for easy cleanups
  5. Nursing blanket or a coverup to keep things discreet
  6. A good cooler bag to store your milk— find out top picks HERE
